Acura at 2010 ZDX Crossover Officially Disclosed.


Though the concept car was shown at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, the company has now officially released the pictures along with a press release. The pictures of the actual car are not radically different from the concept pictures. It is only that the headlights, tail lamps and a few details in the lower front fascia are somewhat different.
The Acura ZDX has the same 300-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine as in the RL and TL, with Acura’s first six-speed automatic transmission, and the torque vectoring Super Handling-All Wheel Drive. The crossover will most likely compete with BMW’s new 5 series GT. The price of this car has not yet been released and we will only learn of it when it enters the market.

Acura 2010 ZDX the Wraps Off the New York Auto Show


Well, after half a dozen or so teases, we just saw the real-deal Acura ZDX crossover at the New York Auto Show. Well, almost real-deal; they did admit that the vehicle you see here is actually the concept. Lights, lower fascia, and taillights are likely to be different for the production model.

Taking a page out of BMW's book, they claim it's "an entirely new category of vehicle." Could've fooled us, though it does appear to sit lower to the ground than BMW's X6 Sports Activity Coupe.

Primary designer Michelle Christiansen, just 25 years old, did an admirable job, producing an interesting, elegant vehicle. I found the rear and rear 3/4 views the most attractive, was pleased to note the Acura beak has been reduced, though I wished both front and rear overhangs were shorter.

The dash appeared to be a near facsimile of the TL, not a bad thing at all. Subtle touches like a two-tone steering wheel with perhaps Alcantara inserts were elegant and typically subtle for the brand.

They were mum on the mechanicals apart from saying it'll be a V-6 (we'd bet on the 3.7-liter from the TL) and that it will have Acura's SH-AWD (super-handling all-wheel drive) that reduces understeer when the driver is accelerating. That means a front-wheel drive architecture, meaning this vehicle most likely carries more of its weight over the front axle than the rear.

A quick peek in the rear compartment revealed adequate leg room but head room perhaps somewhat tight for taller individuals. But if, as an Acura spokesman claimed, the Acura ZDX is designed for "affluent empty-nesters," then the rear seats likely won't get tons of use anyway.

2010 Acura ZDX


A few weeks after Acura released a series of teaser images, Acura officially pulled the wraps off the concept version of the Acura ZDX crossover at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. Interestingly, the previously released teaser shots actually show early production lighting elements, rather than those found on the NYIAS concept, but we’re told that, other than the lights, there are few changes between the concept and the Acura ZDX that will roll into Acura showrooms this fall as a 2010 model.
Designed by 28-year-old Michelle Christensen (who was only 25 when she penned the first version of the vehicle), the five-passenger Acura ZDX is based on the Acura MDX platform and will be positioned above that seven-seater as a flagship within Acura’s lineup. Although Acura claims that the Acura ZDX will introduce “an entirely new category of luxury vehicle,” no one will be able to help comparing it to that other four-door coupe crossover thingy, the BMW X6, although the Acura ZDX’s ride height is markedly lower. Still, like the X6, it is none too dainty at 192.6 inches long, a vast 78.5 inches wide, and 61.8 inches tall. There are 108.5 inches between the centerlines of the 20-inch wheels, which are shod with 275/40-series Michelin Latitude tires.
Acura confirms that it will be powered by a V-6—likely the Acura MDX’s 3.7-liter—mated to an all-new six-speed automatic, but declined to reveal output specifics. It will, of course, come standard with Acura’s nifty Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
The interior of every Acura ZDX will feature leather seating surfaces, and occupants will get plenty of light from above via the standard full-length glass roof. For lane changes—which undoubtedly will be hampered by those huge C-pillars—the Acura ZDX will offer a blind-spot information system, as well as a multi-angle rear-view camera, surround-sound audio, navigation and, we imagine, a whole lot more if it is to, as Acura claims, achieve “a whole new level of prestige” for the brand.

Acura ZDX Crossover Coupe


As we’ve seen before here and here, Acura is planning a new luxury crossover coupe. This segment is, of course, the long lost holy grail of car design – it is everything to everyone and nothing to anyone. I could go on all day about the BMW X6 and the miserable trend it has started, but it would hurt too much to think about any further – after the jump.
Regardless of my personal thoughts, this is some of the more hotly contested and interesting news to come along in a couple of days, so it’s worth sharing.
This is the first camouflage-free spyshot of the oddly-dubbed Acura ZDX courtesy of the aptly-named spies at Autospies. My take? The teasers were better. The teaser shots made this vehicle look so muscular and taught that I actually had some expectations. Clearly, this was a mistake on my part. I should have known that there was a good reason why those shots were taken in the dark.
About the only redeeming quality of the Acura ZDX so far is the shield grille. It isn’t nearly as humungous as it is on, say, the TL. Other than that, the headlights look like they’re from the new Murano, the front bumper vents are ripped from a Pontiac, the profile just looks fat, and the whole think looks more like a car than an SUV. Kind of like the Venza then, if the Venza had never been in a microwave.
Until the New York Auto Show officially kicks off tomorrow, we don’t know powertrain details. Don’t expect the oft-rumoured V8, don’t expect a manual, and don’t expect RWD. Most likely it will have the same running gear as a the TL with SH-AWD and a V6.
And here I was thinking that the Acura ZDX was supposed to “bring a new level of prestige to the Acura lineup”. I guess not. Yawn.

A Notable Feature of the 2010 Acura ZDX

Though we don't expect any major innovations, the 2010 Acura ZDX might introduce several features that would be new to this brand but that class rivals already offer. We're thinking of useful non-essentials like obstacle detection, a lane departure and/or guidance system, and adaptive cruise control, possibly integrated with low-speed automatic braking. Such items could be easily bundled into a Technology Package upgrade for those who must have all the bells and whistles, but we'll have to wait and see what the product planners cook up.

2010 Acura ZDX Details


Predictably, the 2010 Acura ZDX will essentially be an Acura MDX with a longer, sportier body. The prototype ZDX Acura displayed at the 2009 New York Auto Show indicates a sleek 4-door SUV­ shape, with a steeply sloped rear liftgate, angular lower-body lines, and the shiny, spade-shaped grille insert that's appearing on other Acuras. We expect the Acura ZDX to be visually distinct from both Acura RDX and Acura MDX.
The 2010 Acura ZDX should parallel its parent for the powertrain and most other features. That means a 3.7-liter V6 and all-wheel drive, but look for a 6-speed automatic rather than the 5-speed unit found in the Acura MDX.

­Likewise, the 2010 Acura ZDX should follow the Acura MDX in offering only a handful of option packages. Acura hasn't released details yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Technology, Entertainment, and Sport packages. Dealers may offer other goodies like larger-diameter rims and low-profile performance tires.
With crossovers seeming to get sportier all the time, the 2010 Acura ZDX should help broaden Acura's customer base, important for a brand that still aspires to gilt-edged status. But with even established top-selling vehicles now begging for sales, Acura may have to wait a while before its product offensive can pay tangible dividends, and nobody knows how long that might take.

The Acura ZDX: A Crossover Sedan We’d Love to Hate


The Acura ZDX sport utility sedan has been introduced to the world. For the first time in history, we can describe an Acura as wildly inappropriate.
We prepared ourselves for the worst when we learned that Acura was planning to reveal the prototype of their BMW X6 fighter at the New York International Auto Show yesterday. After all, the only thing the world needs less than the original X6 is a milquetoast imitation. But somehow, Acura managed to nearly win us over with their signature inoffensive design, exceptionally adequate performance and seamless integration of technology — all of which will be perfected by the time the production Acura ZDX goes on sale.
Our only reservation? As the fate of the world turns from bad to worse, the luxury sport-ute sedan eschews our new national modesty like a pre-revolution French king. Forget about letting them eat cake. The Acura ZDX is a heaping helping of foie gras.
The launch began with remarks from Jeff Conrad, Acura’s VP of sales. Conrad told the crowd that the Acura ZDX "takes the best attributes of a stylish coupe, a versatile sedan and a flexible SUV - and successfully blends them into a head-turning vehicle for active and adventurous individuals to explore their passions." That also means it’s got the cargo space of a stylish coupe with the agility, fuel economy and visibility of an SUV. We imagine the "head turning" refers to what Acura ZDX drivers will be doing when they attempt to parallel park — despite the on-board cameras and blind-spot detectors. Like nonalcoholic beer or Van Halen unplugged, the Acura ZDX has the potential to be the worst of both worlds.
Luckily for Acura, the Acura ZDX prototype exhibits the carmaker’s trademark flawless execution. No word on performance yet, but we imagine it’ll be more than adequate with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and a paddle-shifted six-speed transmission mated to an all-aluminum VTEC V6. One of their best decisions was hiring Michelle Christensen, a 25-year-old recent graduate of Art Center College of Design, who managed to keep the prototype’s sheetmetal from aping a Pontiac Aztek or an AMC Eagle. It’s only because of Acura’s new design language that the ZDX kind of looks like an Autobot.
Conrad suggested that Acura ZDX owners would use their car for "navigating city streets in search of a trendy new restaurant, or comfortably covering the miles to a favorite ski resort or ocean front retreat." Unfortunately for potential owners, its SUV-height suspension means you’ll be at eye-level with your former coworkers when they’re sitting on the bus headed to the unemployment office. At least the Acura/ELS premium sound system lets you drown out derisive taunts from the proletariat, while the AcuraLink navigation system can route you around those pesky breadlines.

All-New Acura ZDX to Debut at New York International Auto Show


Acura announced it will debut a prototype of the all-new Acura ZDX luxury four-door sport coupe at the New York International Auto Show. The prototype features striking coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility to define a new luxury category.
“The Acura ZDX prototype is unlike anything you have ever seen before from Acura,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president, Acura sales. “The prototype showcases a new level of luxury, style and refinement for Acura and speaks volumes towards our commitment to advancing the brand.”
